National Sunglasses Day
June 27th is National Sunglasses Day!
International Sunglasses Day is an annual awareness event that promotes the use of sunglasses to protect our eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. It is a day to appreciate the style, comfort, and, most importantly, the safety benefits that sunglasses provide. The event encourages people to learn about UV safety and to make wearing sunglasses a regular habit.
What are we doing about it?
Since we don't carry traditional sunglasses here at Nova Industrial, we're tweaking the letter of the law a bit and offering a 10% discount on all of our safety glasses for the days before and after June 27th!* Many of our tinted and mirrored lenses offer considerable UV protection, but note that clear lenses usually don't. They all get our discount, though!
Why is International Sunglasses Day Important?
Sunglasses do more than add flair to your outfit—they are vital for eye health. Exposure to UV rays can lead to serious eye conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and even some forms of eye cancer. By raising awareness, International Sunglasses Day encourages everyone to protect their vision and understand the long-term benefits of quality sunglasses.
History of International Sunglasses Day
National Sunglasses Day was created by the Vision Council Foundation in 2009. Each year the Foundation promotes this National Day by providing tips and recommendations on how to keep our eyes healthy from harmful UV rays. Visit the Vision Council Foundation website to get a free Toolkit that contains both ready-to-use and customizable materials to help spread that word about practicing UV safety!
Facts About Sunglasses
- Sunglasses were first made popular in the 20th century as both a fashion statement and a protective measure.
- Not all sunglasses offer UV protection—look for labels that state “100% UV protection” or “UV400”.
- Children’s eyes are more sensitive to UV rays, making sunglasses especially important for them.
- Wearing sunglasses can help reduce eye fatigue and headaches caused by bright sunlight.
